Moving In
Practical Moving-In Checklist
Once you’ve secured a rental, it’s time to prepare for move-in. The Dutch system requires a few bureaucratic and logistical steps.
Things to Do Before Moving In
Registration (inschrijven): Register your new address at the local municipality (gemeente) to receive a BSN (citizen service number). Required for tax, healthcare, and work.
Utility setup: In some rentals—especially furnished or shared ones—utilities (gas, water, electricity, internet) may already be included in your monthly payment and arranged by the landlord. If not, you’ll need to set them up yourself. Common providers include Vattenfall, Eneco, Greenchoice, KPN, and Ziggo.
Insurance: Consider an inboedelverzekering (contents insurance) to protect personal belongings
On Moving Day
Walk through the property with the landlord and take note of existing damages
Take photos and a written inventory, signed by both parties
Confirm you receive all keys and building access cards
Having a digital folder with contracts, receipts, and communication can save time in case of disputes.
